3-Day Workshop, Thursday, November 14th – Saturday, Nov. 16 from 10-4

At University Art, 2601 J Street, Sacramento, CA

This 3-day workshop will showcase how to simplify the human portrait.  We will practice color mixes using a limited color palette of 3 colors – yes, three!  Within these color mixes, we will explore combinations on how to create mid-tones, shadows, and highlights.  In-depth lectures and demonstrations will be given throughout the workshop on how to finesse color mixing and layering techniques.  Learn how to build a strong structural foundation by focusing on facial planes.  We will use our color mix reference to paint a simplified human portrait. This workshop is limited to only three students so you will have plenty of one-on-one support.  Even though we will be working towards a “completed portrait” the emphasis will be on familiarizing ourselves with how to build up layers using purposeful color mixes in order to depict facial structure.  Yes, this workshop focuses on encaustic portraiture, however, the techniques and practices you will learn are applicable to all subject matters in encaustic art.  You will absolutely gain a better understanding of how to take your art to the next level.

Atmospheric Depth Acrylic Workshop with Jaya King

December 12th, from 10 am4 pm

Misty mornings, hazy low-lying clouds and fog offer subtle, thick and wonderful atmosphere to a painting.  There are so many different moods to the sky above. Even though mega-dynamic billowing clouds have the allure of grandeur, it is equally important to be able to capture the subtlety of light through a veil of mist or fog.  One of the most beautiful subjects to paint in nature is the ever-changing sky. Sunsets, starry nights, lazy summer days, and storm fronts provide a lifetime of inspiration. This full-day acrylic workshop will focus on creating depth and atmosphere in a simple “sky-scape” (pictured above). Demo’s will be given throughout the day covering glazing, layering and color-mixing techniques. By using a limited color palette of only three (you heard right – three!) colors we will build transparent and opaque layers to ultimately capture the misty veil of a foggy day.
